WATCH: SAPD video shows officers pleading with armed man to stop reaching before fatal shooting

The San Antonio Police Department released body-camera footage Wednesday showing officers repeatedly ordering a 69-year-old armed man to stop reaching for his gun before five officers shot and killed him.
Police were called after a woman reported that her neighbor, later identified as Raul Garza, was outside waving a gun. In audio from the 911 call included in SAPD’s critical incident video, the caller told dispatchers that police had a history with Garza and questioned whether he was experiencing a mental health crisis.
Body-camera footage shows officers encountering Garza outside with a gun in a holster.
Officers repeatedly directed Garza to put his hands on his head, turn around and face away from them. At times, Garza questioned why officers were there and accused them of trespassing, according to the video.
At one point, an officer attempted to reassure Garza and de-escalate the encounter.
“You want me to put my gun away? I’ll put my gun away,” the officer told him before asking Garza to turn around.
The officer also asked whether Garza wanted police to call his daughter and repeatedly told him to relax.
ounter continued, officers warned Garza not to reach toward the gun in his holster.
“Please don’t do that,” one officer said as Garza moved his hand toward the weapon.
Moments later, officers repeatedly yelled at Garza to stop reaching down. Garza then reached toward the gun again, and the five officers fired their duty weapons, according to SAPD.
Garza died at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured.
SAPD identified the officers who fired their weapons as Luis Cortes Garcia and Richard Julien, who each had less than a year of service; John Reyes and Aldamaris Flores, who each had two years of service; and Joshua Rodriguez, who had been with the department for four years.
SAPD’s Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate but concurrent investigations. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office is also reviewing the shooting.
